Friday in Brooklyn, a 73-year-old man was hit while crossing an intersection — not once, but twice. As the elderly man was crossing the street, a gray Dodge Dakota heading east on 65th Street struck him. The man was propelled into the westbound land where he was then struck by a Chevy Astro van.
According to officials, the 73-year-old suffered severe trauma to his body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident took place around 5:50 a.m. The senior citizen apparently lived less than a block from where the accident took place. According to a neighbor, the man was probably on his way to work. She also stated that he was a “very family-oriented,” good guy.
A witness, who claimed she did not actually see the accident occur, but saw it right after when the man lay beneath the car, stated that the man was crossing where there was no crosswalk. She said people “just fly through this intersection.”
The drivers of the cars that hit the 73-year-old man stayed at the scene. At the time, no charges had been filed.
Pedestrian accidents occur for a number of different reasons. Sometimes a person is “jay walking” (crossing at a place that is not meant for crossing), which this man may have been doing. Sometimes people are speeding or running red lights. DUIs are also a cause for pedestrian accidents.
Whatever the cause, when a pedestrian and car accident does occur, there are usually severe injuries or fatalities. After the accident, a thorough investigation is done to determine the exact cause.
