Recent Road Construction Could Have Led to Fatal Accident

Recent road construction could have led to a fatal accident that took the life of a 3-year-old girl in the Bronx, New York. The accident happened on Saturday morning and left multiple family members injured. The accident occurred on Bruckner Boulevard shortly after 10 in the morning. The road was recently milled and is uneven.

Witnesses of the accident have said that the vehicle being driven by the family, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu, swerved to avoid a raised metal sewer cap on the roadway. Police said that a privately owned sanitation truck hit the family’s vehicle.

All four people in the car were transported to Lincoln Medical Center, where the 3-year-old girl died from her injuries. The other three patients are adults. The adults in the car were the girl’s mother and grandparents. The family was en route to a dance class for the little girl.

Police said that the adult victims taken to the hospital were suffering from minor injuries and all were in critical condition. Police also said that the girl was correctly seated and restrained in a child car seat when the accident occurred.

The city’s Department of Transportation said that a lag occurs between the milling of a road and the final paving in order for other agencies to complete their work. According to AAA, drivers should operate their vehicles slowly on a milled road. If they come upon any raised section, the vehicle should drive around it if safe. If not, the vehicle should slowly drive over the raised section in order to avoid damage to the vehicle.

The driver of the sanitation truck stayed at the scene of the accident and cooperated with responding police officers. The investigation is ongoing, but police do not believe any criminal activity was involved in the accident on the part of the truck driver.
