Increase in Traffic Deaths Across the U.S.

In 2015, there was a 7.2 percent increase in deaths in traffic accidents over the previous year. This is the largest increase in traffic fatalities since the 1960s. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were more than 35,000 deaths in motor vehicle accidents last year alone.

What has caused this increase?

According to the NHTSA, the improving job market and low gas prices have led to more people on the road, travelling further in their cars. With more drivers on the road, there is a higher likelihood of accidents. Additionally, the NHTSA says that many of the recent deaths involved accidents where:

  • A passenger or driver didn’t wear a seat belt
  • A driver was distracted or drunk
  • A vehicle was speeding

Officials are looking for ways to reverse this trend and improve safety on the roads. In the meantime, you can work to prevent accidents of your own.

Put away your cell phone when you are behind the wheel. It’s illegal to use a handheld mobile device behind the wheel, and distracted driving leads to serious accidents. Get a ride or call a cab when you have been drinking. Finally, follow the speed limit and always wear your seatbelt.

After a fatal traffic accident

If you lost someone in a traffic accident, your loved one is more than a statistic. Nothing can make up for your loss. There are steps you can take to hold the negligent driver accountable. An attorney can help you bring a claim against the driver and seek justice after the loss of a loved one.
